My first encounter with the work of Capernwray was in 1999. Having been saved just a year before, i struggled to understand it all. Nevertheless in spite of me punching the air and walking to Carnforth in the night out of confusion & frustration, God began to work. The seed was sown and 5yrs later I found myself as a student at Capernwray Hall. This perspective on the Major is I suppose one from a distance - having only ever heard him preach twice, once during Bible School at the Hall. I think i would want firstly to say 'thank you' to God, for sharing on earth and guiding this great man and his family to doing what they have done in the work of Torchbearers. Everytime I visit the Hall it feels like home - in a way I struggle to describe, just a shear presence of God and godliness about the place.
But for this dedication I would like to congratulate and very humbly thank the Major for all that he did in his lifetime on earth - yes, it WAS God that worked through him, but it still took a military officer on the tail-end of what must have been a hell-ish war, to make sacrifices and efforts to follow in faith a plan that he did not fully understand, birthed by a God whom he loved dearly enough to take those risks - A LESSON FOR US ALL.
Thank you Lord, for the life of a man who calls me to higher ground, to holy ground throughout life's struggles and in spite of my failings. The work of God through Capernwray, and the efforts of the Major and his surrounding family are the single most powerful influence in my Christian walk which drive me back to the Word, and to realising that It's not about 'Us' saying we could, but about God saying he would. Thanks to that realisation i am drawn to higher & holy ground everyday. To the Thomas family, as just one of doubtless millions of humans effected by your efforts, i would like to express my sympathy with you at this difficult time - yet, if you will forgive me, i do so with a glint in my eye.... that 'Capernwray Corner' in heaven will be a hard act to follow in the praising of the Lord of Hosts, and i look forward to 'falling-in' behind the Major for that glorious parade..!!
Amen.
