I guess with my grandfather being Dr John Hunter, Capernwray Hall has been a part of my life since I was born. As a young boy, 'The Major' was an iconic figure who commanded authority by his very presence and to be honest, I was a little fearful of him. I can recall often sneaking around the corridors of Capernwray to be met by him coming around a corner only for him to thrust out his hand and give me a warm handshake, and to find to my surprise a 50p coin had magically appeared in my palm! I wonder how many other "man woman and child" over the years had experienced this. As I grew older, I came to understand what a giant this man really was, with his work with young germans in the years following the war and who truly lived by faith not by sight.
He will be supremely missed but I can imagine him walking the courts of heaven pressing coins into young angels palms!
